Facebook has stopped using Microsoft Bing to power its searches through social network, ending a partnership that extends almost two years.
What is not clear, however, is who broke up with whom.
In January 2013, Facebook has started Graph Search, a search bar at the top of every page in Facebook.Shkruani "friends who live in San Francisco," and you will get a list of friends (and potential friends) living in the city. Before now, however, if you typed in a worldly term as "baseball", Facebook will suggest a list of related terms, but to redirect the search to Bing if you insisted on "baseball" itself. There is more.
Now, Facebook insists on using its suggested terms. And trying to come up with a term that does not index it in one form or another ("solenoid," for example) is very difficult.
Microsoft said that in 2013 had reached an agreement with Facebook to gain insight into the Facebook social graph, and the kinds of things the user can search the service. "You are doing different kinds of research," said a spokesman at the time. "When someone asks for" restaurants in San Mateo, "the goal can be different than if you were doing a general purpose search on Google or Bing. It sounds connotations, but this is a way we can to improve the algorithm ".
In the meantime, Microsoft was busy building out research partnerships with Facebook and other social networking companies to improve its insight into what people were sharing online.
It was unclear, however, how many people are using Facebook search bar to search by search terms-or nothing, period. "We are not currently showing web search results on Facebook Search because we are focused on helping people find what is allocated to them on Facebook," said a company spokesman told Reuters, which reported earlier story Friday. "We continue to have a great partnership with Microsoft in many different areas."
Facebook certainly never showed advertising Bing's Facebook pages, and it is unclear how much traffic Microsoft received as a result. Microsoft search within its countries "and other Consumer Devices" business, where surging its business Office 365 can hide any problems with the search. Bing search share is just under 20 percent-though Bing is not profitable yet. If Microsoft had to pay Facebook for its search agreement, cutting ties can be a simple way to save money.
Why it matters: Reuters seems to think that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is going down on the way to developing its own search engine, collection of shared knowledge / opinions Facebook friends instead of some objective, research-based in truth. If that is the case, Facebook may have thrown Bing instead. And then you could argue that Bing simply fell by the wayside. But Yahoo has also been upset at the way Bing has delivered (or not delivered) search results, and it may be true that Bing is not provided. Until Facebook reports its quarterly results next year (and analysts have a chance to grill management) we can not know for sure.
